Drive by The Cars was released on July 23, 1984, with Stranger Eyes as the B side. It was the third single from the album Heartbeat City. Written by Cars vocalist Ric Ocasek, the track was sung by bassist Benjamin Orr.

The song peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming The Cars’ highest charting single in the United States. It reached No. 4 on the UK Singles chart and was a top 10 hit in several other countries.

Watch the music video for the song, which was directed by Timothy Hutton and starred Ocasek’s future wife Paulina Porizkova.
