80s Song of the Day: New Year’s Day by U2

new-years-dayNew Year’s Day by U2 was released on January 1, 1983, with Treasure (Whatever Happened To Pete The Chop) as the B side. It was the lead single from the Irish rock band’s third studio album War.

The song, about the Polish Solidarity movement, was an international hit and the band’s first UK hit single, reaching No. 10. In the United States, New Year’s Day was the band’s first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 53.
