Call Me by Blondie was released on February 1, 1980, with an instrumental version of the song as the B side. It appeared on the soundtrack for the movie American Gigolo, starring Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton.

In the United States, the song spent six consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and, according to Billboard magazine, was the top-selling single for 1980 in the United States. It was also a No. 1 hit in the United Kingdom and Canada.
