The song was Crowded House’s second North American hit, after Don’t Dream It’s Over. It reached No. 7 in the United States and No. 10 in Canada. In the United Kingdom, it reached No. 95 on the UK Singles Chart.

A 12″ single for Something So Strong released in the United Kingdom contained two live tracks: Something So Strong, performed at The Trocadero in Philadelphia on March 24, 1987; and Don’t Dream It’s Over, performed at The Roxy in Los Angeles on February 26, 1987.
