Word Up! By Cameo was released on May 27, 1986, with Urban Warrior as the B side. It was a single from the funk group’s album of the same name.

Word Up! was Cameo’s first song to hit the U.S. Top 40, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the United Kingdom, it spent 10 weeks in the top 40, peaking at No. 3.

In 1987, the song, and the group’s lead singer Larry Blackmon, appeared in a commercial for Cherry Coke (to this day, I still think “Word Up is Cherry Coke” whenever I hear this song).
