The song, co-written by Petty, Mike Campbell, and Jeff Lynne, reached No. 23 in both the United States and Canada. It reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart.
The music video for Runnin’ Down a Dream featured animation based on several episodes of the Winsor McCay comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland, featuring a drawing style reminiscent of McCay’s and showing Petty as one of the comic strip’s characters, Flip, traveling through Slumberland.
