80s Song of the Day: Rapture by Blondie

Rapture by Blondie was released January 12, 1981, with Walk Like Me as the B side. It was the second single from the band’s fifth studio album Autoamerican.

The song – which combined elements of disco, funk, and hip hop – reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for two weeks. It was the first No. 1 single in the United States to feature rap. In the United Kingdom, the song reached No. 5.

The music video for Rapture premiered on the TV show Solid Gold on January 31, 1981. Later, it become the first rap video to appear on MTV. The video includes a cameo by Fab 5 Freddy, who is referenced in the song’s lyric “Fab 5 Freddy told me everybody’s fly.”
