80s Song of the Day: Photograph by Def Leppard

Photograph by Def Leppard was released on February 3, 1983. The U.K. release featured Bringin’ on the Heartbreak as the B side, while the U.S. release had Action! Not Words as the B side. Photograph was the lead single from the band’s third studio album Pyromania.

Photograph was Def Leppard’s first hit. It reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, where it stayed for six weeks. It reached No. 66 on the UK Singles Chart.

And here’s a limited edition 7″ release; 500 copies were released in the United Kingdom. A photograph of Marilyn Monroe appears on this version, while a Marilyn look-a-like appears on the version above.

According to songfacts.com, “The band would sometimes dedicate this song to Marilyn Monroe when they performed it live, and the video featured a Monroe look-a-like. This drew many listeners to the conclusion that the song is about the actress, but the Monroe association was constructed for the sake of a good story.”
