The song was Madonna’s first Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 10. In the United Kingdom, it reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart after it was re-released in 1986, with Physical Attraction as the B side.
Rolling Stone quoted Seymour Stein, the Sire Records executive who signed Madonna, as saying about her and the song, “I dared to believe this was going to be huge beyond belief, the biggest thing I’d ever had, after I heard ‘Borderline.’ The passion that she put into that song, I thought, there’s no stopping this girl.”
