The song reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the third single from Slippery When Wet to reach the Top 10 on the Hot 100, making it the first hard rock album to have 3 Top 10 hits on that chart. In both the United Kingdom and Australia, Wanted Dead or Alive peaked at No. 13.

During a 2008 Bon Jovi concert, Jon Bon Jovi said the song “absolutely positively was influenced by” Bob Seger’s song Turn the Page.
