Always on My Mind by Willie Nelson was released March 6, 1982, with The Party’s Over as the B side. It was a single from Nelson’s album of the same name.
The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and was Billboard’s biggest country hit for 1982. It also achieved success on Top 40 radio, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song was first recorded (as You Were Always on My Mind) in 1972 by Brenda Lee and Gwen McCrae. Five years after Nelson released his version, in 1987, Pet Shop Boys also had a hit with their cover of the song; that version went to No. 1 in the United Kingdom and No. 4 in the United States.
Nelson’s version won three Grammys in 1983, for Song of the Year, Best Country Song, and Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
