Looking for a New Love by Jody Watley was released January 6, 1987. The 7″ release in the United States featured an a cappella version of the song as the B side. It was the first single from Watley’s eponymous debut album.
The song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart, where it stayed for four weeks. It was a No.1 hit in Canada.
Watley nailed the breakup song with Looking for a New Love long before Taylor Swift was even conceived, writing the lyrics after a recent split. And although Arnold Schwarzenegger may get all the credit for the popularity of the phrase “Hasta la vista, baby,” after he delivered it in the movie Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Watley coined it four years earlier as a lyric in this song.
The same year Looking for a New Love was released, Watley won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
