Don’t You (Forget About Me) by Simple Minds was released in the United Kingdom on April 8, 1985, with A Brass Band in Africa as the B side. The song appeared on the original motion picture soundtrack for the John Hughes movie The Breakfast Club.
The song stayed on the UK Singles Chart from 1985 to 1987, one of the longest time spans for any single in the history of the chart. It peaked at No. 7. In the United States, the song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Don’t You (Forget About Me) was written by producer Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff. Simple Minds originally was reluctant to record a song that they did not write, but were persuaded by Forsey and Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, who was Simple Minds front man Jim Kerr’s then-wife.
